Sounders FC falls 2-0 on the road at FC Dallas

dempey vs FCD 5/14

FRISCO, TEXAS – A third-minute penalty kick from Mauro Diaz and a late strike from Michael Barrios was the difference on Saturday evening as Seattle Sounders FC (4-5-1, 13 points) fell 2-0 to FC Dallas (7-4-2, 23 points) at Toyota Stadium. The loss ends Seattle’s two-match winning streak and marks just the second time this season the Rave Green have been held scoreless. Sounders FC returns to action next Saturday, May 21 against the Colorado Rapids (7:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, ROOT SPORTS, Univision-Seattle, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Dallas stuck early in the third minute via a Diaz penalty kick. After Stefan Frei made a point-blank diving save, a subsequent FC Dallas chance was whistled dead with referee Ricardo Salazar pointing to the spot after Chad Marshall brought down Walker Zimmerman in the area. Diaz’s ensuing spot-kick was struck well into the top of the net and out of Frei’s reach.

Seattle wasn’t without its share of chances, putting four of seven total shots on-frame. In the first minute of play, midfielder Erik Friberg threaded a through-ball to Herculez Gomez behind the defense for a one-on-one with the keeper, but the striker’s shot sailed just wide. Friberg then found Jordan Morris with a cross in the 19th minute directly in front of goal, but the rookie’s attempt went right into the arms of Dallas keeper Chris Seitz.

Oscar Pareja’s side sealed the win in the 80th minute when Barrios got on the end of a Mauro Rosales chipped through-ball and buried a shot to the far post past Frei to make it 2-0.
