Editor’s Note: SoundersFC.com is taking a look back through the history books to dig up some of the biggest and best moments in franchise history, both on and off the field.
On April 5, 2014, the Seattle Sounders and rival Portland Timbers played perhaps the most entertaining game in their lengthy history at Providence Park in Portland. It was the 85th match in series history, ending in a 4-4 draw after both sides landed punches and took a few as well.
The Sounders jumped out to an early lead behind former Timbers forward Kenny Cooper’s early goal, but the Timbers responded and ultimately surged ahead 2-1. Clint Dempsey followed with his first of three goals on the day in 24th minute, and the teams headed into the locker room tied, 2-2.
The Timbers wasted little time surging ahead again and took a 4-2 lead in the 57th minute, but the Sounders weren’t done. Dempsey scored in the 85th minute and DeAndre Yedlin set up a penalty kick a minute later that Dempsey converted for the hat trick, and the final score was set.
What. A. Game. We look forward to more chapters like this in the Cascadia rivalry this season. Check out the highlights above.
