INTRODUCING THE SALISH SEA KIT

The Seattle Sounders are proud to honor our deep connection to the Puget Sound and our shared responsibility as stewards of the greater Salish Sea watershed through our new community jersey: The Salish Sea Kit.

This kit represents more than just a commitment to preserving water — it’s a celebration of the rich cultural traditions that flow through this region.

This jersey is the result of a meaningful collaboration with Connie McCloud, Gail White Eagle, and Danielle Morsette — visionary artists from the Puyallup, Muckleshoot, and Suquamish Tribes. Their creativity and cultural knowledge have shaped a design that celebrates our water, its people, and its timeless traditions.

It is a call to remember our shared responsibility—to protect what sustains us and to commemorate the connections that make us whole. Together, we are flowing and woven into the fabric of this place we call home.

The design of this kit draws directly from the artistry of our three collaborators, bringing their weaving traditions to life on a global stage. The pattern is a striking blend of symmetrical shapes and recurring diagonal lines, all rooted in the geometric precision of a mathematical grid. It reflects the intricate balance of form and function found in Coast Salish weaving.

Inspired by two traditional Southern Coast Salish weaving techniques—twilling and twining—the design evokes a sense of woven dimensionality and flow. These techniques, passed down through generations, honor the resilience, deep rooted ties, and creativity that define the cultural fabric of this region.

The kit features a spectrum of blues and greens that embody the heart of the Sounders and the spirit of the Salish Sea. These colors not only tie back to our core identity but reflect the natural harmony of this region—where vibrant blues of water meet lush greens of sea grass, seaweed, and towering trees.

The jock tag features the statement, “Water Is Sacred,” written in both English and Southern Lushootseed, the traditional language of the Suquamish, Muckleshoot, Puyallup, and neighboring Coast Salish Tribes. This powerful phrase underscores the deep cultural and spiritual bond to the Salish Sea and serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect it.

Emblazoned across the back of the neck is a series of symbols that flow together seamlessly: a wave of water, the tail of an orca, and a flowing "S" that represents both Seattle Sounders and the Salish Sea. Anchored by our birth year, 1974, this design reflects a commitment to stewardship that spans generations— linking the past, present, and future in the fight to preserve our environment.
