It was a sweep as the three Academy teams combined for five wins on the weekend. The U-18s defeated San Diego Surf 4-0, with goals coming from Sean Bowman, Lorenzo Ramos, Ryan DeGroot and Ryan Schaefer. The U-16s followed up with a strong performance winning 2-0 over the Surf with Tyler Black and Quentin Chi contributing a goal a piece. The U-18s would make it a six-point weekend with a 2-1 victory over. Sean Bowman notched his 19th goal of the season and Samuel Gomez contributed the game winner. The U-16s ended the weekend in decisive fashion with a 6-0 victory over the Nomads. Quentin Chi, Kei Tomozawa, Alex Bradbury, Ivory Randle, Sam Johnson and Cayman John all made the score sheet.

On Saturday, February 28, the U-14s took on the Puget Sound Premier League U-15 All Star team. The team battled a competitive older squad earning a 2-1 victory with goals coming from Joseph Richardson and Bobby Stoyanov. The first goal of the match came when Richardson converted his penalty kick attempt. The game-winner started with a quality build up in midfield, a nice bit of combination with a quick change of speed finding Stoyanov behind the backline. The in-form striker did the rest.

All three teams will return to home action this weekend at Starfire Sports. The U-18s will try to claim the top spot in the Northwest Division as they take on San Juan Soccer Club Saturday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m. with the U-16 match to follow at 2:00 p.m. The U-14 squad will round out the afternoon with a match against the U-15s at 4:00 p.m. All matches will take place on the Stadium field.

Standout Performers

Henry Baldwin has returned after injury to the U-16 team and has made an immediate impact. The team kept two clean sheets with Baldwin marshaling the back line with great authority. Sean Bowman scored in both U-18 matches as well as providing assists with some unselfish play in and around the goal.

Highlight of the Week

Tyler Black’s opener for the U-16s against San Diego Surf proved a pivotal moment in a very tight game. After some neat interchanges on the right side of the field Black made a diagonal run from the left wing area and was picked out beautifully with a Cameron Martin pass. Black went on to coolly slot a shot past the stranded Surf goalkeeper.

In the Standings:

  • U-18s are currently second in the Northwest Division with 47 points (15-4-2)
  • U-16s are currently third in the Northwest Division with 34 points (10-7-4)
  • U-14s are currently first in the Far West Regional League with 12 points (3-0-0)

Coach’s Take

“I was happy with our mentality this past weekend. We had two shutouts and scored eight goals with seven different goal scorers.”  - U-16 Head Coach Sean Henderson
