It took strong performances all over the pitch for Sounders FC to overcome New York City FC in front of 25,384 fans at Yankee Stadium. As a result, Seattle is well represented on the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for week nine.
Obafemi Martins, named to the Team of the Week for the second time this year, scored twice in the Rave Green’s 3-1 win. The 2014 MLS MVP runner-up also recorded an assist on Clint Dempsey’s game-winning strike. Following the weekend’s results, Martins leads the league with six goals.
In his return from a one-game suspension, centerback Chad Marshall was also named to his second Team of the Week. Both Marshall and Brad Evans were stout in the back as NYCFC was held to just one goal despite taking 20 shots Sunday night.
Fellow defender Dylan Remick was named to the Team of the Week for the first time in his career. The third-year pro has now made five straight starts at left back for Sigi Schmid’s side after sitting on the bench for the first three matches and playing one game with S2.
Last but not least, Dempsey and Stefan Frei were two of the seven players named to the bench for week nine. Dempsey netted a 58th-minute game-winner on Sunday, followed by a first-touch, back-heel assist on Martins’ insurance tally in the 66th minute. Frei, meanwhile, made eight saves en route to his fifth victory of the season. The Swiss shot-stopper ranks second in MLS with a 0.75 goals-against average and is tied for third with 26 saves.
