SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that forward Jordan Morris and midfielder Cristian Roldan have been called-up to the United States Men’s National Team for the next round of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. As all Concacaf teams start their second round of games against the seven other opponents in the Octagonal, the USMNT is set to host El Salvador on January 27 in Columbus, Ohio (4:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, UniMás, TUDN) before traveling to Hamilton, Ontario on January 30 to face Canada (12:00 p.m. PT / Paramount+, Telemundo, Universo). Head Coach Gregg Berhalter’s squad returns stateside to St. Paul, Minnesota for a matchup with Honduras on February 2 (4:30 p.m. PT / FS1, Univision, TUDN). Both Morris and Roldan have been the USMNT’s training camp in Phoenix.
Morris, 27, continues his return to the U.S. Men’s National Team after missing nine months due to an ACL tear, earning his first call-up to World Cup qualifiers since September of 2017. He recently started in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on December 18, his first international cap since November of 2019. Morris has started 18 of his 40 career appearances for the Stars and Stripes, scoring 10 goals, including four during the Concacaf Nations League in late 2019, the last time he was called up to the squad before his injury. The Mercer Island native was idle for most of the 2021 calendar year due to the ACL injury, making his return to the pitch for Sounders FC on November 2 against the LA Galaxy and getting his first start of the season in the Rave Green’s playoff match on November 24 against Real Salt Lake.
Roldan, 26, has 30 career international caps and 14 starts, also starting against Bosnia and Herzegovina on December 18, playing 90 minutes. In 2021, he played in four 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, in addition to five appearances during the USMNT’s title-winning effort at the Concacaf Gold Cup. Roldan tallied six goals and six assists for Sounders FC during the 2021 MLS campaign.
With six matches remaining in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying, the USMNT sits in second place in the Octagonal standings with 15 points (4-1-3), one point behind first-place Canada and one point ahead of Mexico and Panama The top three teams in the group earn automatic qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with the fourth-place side advancing to the inter-confederation playoffs.
Sounders FC continues to prepare for the 2022 season, kicking off the competitive calendar with a home-and-away series against F.C. Motagua in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League. Seattle plays in Honduras on February 17 before hosting Motagua on February 24 at Lumen Field. The Rave Green’s 2022 MLS campaign begins at home on February 27 vs. Nashville SC.
