MATCH RECAP: Tacoma Defiance falls 2-1 to New Mexico United

Azriel Gonzalez 3-29-19

TACOMA, WASH. – Tacoma Defiance (1-3-0, 3 points) on Friday lost a 2-1 decision to expansion side New Mexico United (2-0-3, 9 points) at Cheney Stadium. Azriel Gonzalez scored the lone goal for Defiance while Ryan Williams and Kevaughn Frater scored for the visitors.

Tacoma struck first on Gonzalez’s first goal of the season in the second minute. Captain Shandon Hopeau sprinted down the right side and sent a ball into the area that Gonzalez finished past New Mexico goalkeeper Cody Mizell.

New Mexico evened the match at 1-1 in the 37th minute on Williams’ first goal of the 2019 campaign. His shot took a deflection inside the area and found its way past Tacoma goalkeeper Trey Muse for the first-half equalizer.

In the 77th minute, Santi Moar sent a cross into the area that found the head of Frater. The striker beat Muse to his left for the game-winning marker. The goal was the third of the season for Frater, who ranks second on the club behind only Moar.

Eight players under the age of 20 saw action for Tacoma tonight, as well as one First Team player in Muse.

Tacoma Defiance next hosts Sacramento Republic FC on Monday, April 1 at Cheney Stadium (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+). The club then hits the road for its next five contests, beginning with a match at Orange County SC on Wednesday, April 10 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+).
