MATCH RECAP: Tacoma Defiance Falls on the Road at Real Monarchs SLC

Ocampo-Chavez Defiance 2019

HERRIMAN, UTAH â€“ Tacoma Defiance (2-12-5, 11 points) on Friday dropped a 5-0 decision to Real Monarchs SLC (8-6-3, 27 points) at Zions Bank Stadium in Utah. The loss snapped a two-match unbeaten streak (0-0-2) for Defiance, who has a week off before playing five of its next six games at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Douglas Martinez recorded a hat trick for the hosts to lead his club to its fifth consecutive victory. Andrew Putna made three saves to earn his first shutout of the season for Real Monarchs, while Maikel Chang and Jack Blake added a goal each.

Chang got Real Monarchs on the board first in the ninth minute when he blasted a ball that hit the crossbar and bounced in to give his side a 1-0 advantage. Martinez’s first marker of the night made it 2-0 in the 37th minute, a lead that they would take into the halftime break.

In the 67th minute, Martinez completed his brace when he blasted a shot from near the top of the area that glanced off Tacoma goalkeeper Trey Muse and found the back of the net. Martinez’s third goal of the evening nine minutes later gave Real Monarchs a 4-0 lead. Blake’s goal in the 83rd minute came from the top of the area after a side dribble to his right into free space.

Five players under the age of 20 saw action for Tacoma tonight, including two First Team players in Muse and Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez.

Tacoma Defiance has a week off before returning to Cheney Stadium for the first time since June 1 when it hosts Las Vegas Lights FC on Wednesday, July 24 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+). The club then hosts OKC Energy FC on Saturday, July 27 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+).
