Notes & Quotes: Plenty of scoring chances created by Sounders in loss to Galaxy

Sounders FC suffered its second defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 1-0 to the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center on Alan Gordon’s header in the 23rd minute.

Despite the outcome, Seattle caused havoc in the LA penalty area throughout the match. The Rave Green recorded season highs in shots (14) and shots on target (10) while forcing Jaime Penedo into making 10 saves, the most by an opposing goalkeeper in club history.

A few of Penedo’s stops were on shots hit directly at him, but many of them required diving saves. Seattle tested him in a variety of ways: long-distance shots, breakaways and headers off corner kicks. Lamar Neagle had five shots on target, one more than the Galaxy compiled as a team.

Considering his team was without starters Clint Dempsey and Gonzalo Pineda, captain Brad Evans called it “probably our best game this year.” Here’s more of what the Sounders had to say after the match regarding their performance.

Sigi Schmid:
“It’s the game of soccer. Last week I didn’t think we played well, and we walked off the field 1-0 winners. And this week I thought we played pretty well. I thought we had more chances, more clean-cut changes. Their goalkeeper comes up with a ton of saves – some which hit him, some saves he makes – and we end up losing the game 1-0. I don’t think, based on our performance, that we deserved to lose.”
“There is not a guy I can point to and say he didn’t play well. I think our guys did pretty well today.”
Brad Evans:
“We created enough chances to go 3-1 up in the first half, and in the second half we created even more chances. You just try to hold it as tight in the back as you can and hope to create more and more chances. If we continue to do that, we’ll find ourselves on the right side of results.”
Lamar Neagle:
“We just didn’t finish. Personally, I know I had three that I could have done a lot better with. It was just a frustrating game knowing that we played pretty well and were in control of the game at the beginning before their goal changed things. It seemed like we were getting the bulk of the chances.”
