World Cup Qualifying

Oalex Anderson bags brace for St. Vincent; Panama's Roman Torres, Uruguay's Nico Lodeiro sit

Guatemala defeated St. Vincent and the Grenadines 9-3 on Tuesday night in 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Both teams did not qualify for the Hexagonal, however, as the United States and Trinidad and Tobago advanced in CONCACAF Group C after the U.S. defeated T&T 4-0 on Tuesday.

Guatemala entered needing a U.S. loss and to make up a 12-goal differential, and they certainly tried. Carlos Ruiz scored five times in his final career international match, while Gerson Tinoco, Jairo Arreola, Rafael Morales and Jean Marquez rounded out the scoring for Guatemala.

Seattle Sounders forward Oalex Anderson recorded a brace for St. Vincent and the Grenadines with goals in the 10th and 29th minutes before being subbed off in the 63rd. Nazir McBurnette tallied in the 89th minute for St. Vincent’s final goal. S2 forward Myron Samuel started and went the full 90.

In CONCACAF Group B, Sounders defender Roman Torres did not dress for Panama in their match vs. Costa Rica. Torres started in the Panamanians' win over Jamaica on Friday and have already qualified for the Hex.

In CONMEBOL qualifying, Uruguay defeated Paraguay 4-0 behind goals from Cristian Rodriguez, Luis Suarez and a brace from Edinson Cavani. Sounders midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro, who started for La Celeste in their 1-0 loss to Argentina on Friday, made the gameday roster but did not see action.
