OTD: Sounders escape with three points in epic clash against Real Salt Lake

Andy Rose RSL

The Sounders have posted a 2-0-1 record in MLS play on the date of September 12, but one match stands out in particular. In 2014, the contest featured two Western Conference powers, a red card, an epic goal from distance and a winner DEEP in second-half stoppage time... The final score?

Seattle Sounders FC 3, Real Salt Lake 2

Here's how it went down.

30' - SEA 0, RSL 1

After a 16-pass sequence, RSL stuns the CenturyLink Field crowd with a goal by star midfielder Javier Morales.

38' - SEA 1, RSL 1

Seattle nets the equalizer with Lamar Neagle's impressive blast from 30 yards out. It would go down as one of the best goals of the season for the Rave Green.

43' - SEA 2, RSL 1

Featuring a combination between two of the best players in club history, Clint Dempsey feeds Obafemi Martins' 13th goal of the campaign to take the lead before halftime.

50' - SEA 2, RSL 2

Morales once again found himself involved in a goalscoring play, this time providing service on a goal by Joao Plata.

68' - RED CARD

RSL defender Nat Borchers denies Martins of a scoring opportunity just outside the area, giving Seattle the man advantage for the remaining 20 minutes of the match.

90'+4' - SEA 3, RSL 2

In the final moments of the match, midfielder Andy Rose sends CenturyLink Field into a frenzy with a game-winning goal. Defender DeAndre Yedlin receives a lob pass in front of the goal and leaves it for Rose, who approaches the ball and strikes a shot under a diving Nick Rimando.

Not only did the victory cushion Seattle's lead to its eventual Supporters' Shield crown the following month, the result served as sweet revenge for Rose, who was traded from RSL to Seattle on draft day in 2012.
