Rave Green close out first round of training camp with scrimmage against Loyola Marymount University

Preseason SoCal

SEATTLE, WASH. â€“ Sounders FC closed out its first stint of training camp in Southern California with a closed-door scrimmage against Loyola Marymount University on Wednesday morning, with a focus on putting preseason concepts to practice against an opponent. The Rave Green and Lions played 105 minutes, with a lineup change at 60 minutes to allow young Seattle players a full 45 minutes of action after the more veteran lineup played 60 minutes for fitness.

Seattle dominated possession and dictated tempo early, and with Shandon Hopeau and Raúl Ruidíaz combining for the opening score in the 14th minute, as Hopeau picked up a loose ball and fed Ruidíaz for a finish from inside the area. The Rave Green nearly took another goal five minutes later, as Danny Leyva took a shot from distance that the Lions goalkeeper just managed to save.

Following a corner kick, Loyola Marymount evened the score 1-1 before taking the 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute off an impressive shot from outside the box that curled into the top corner of the goal, just past Trey Muse’s outstretched fingers.

Jordy Delem equalized for Sounders FC in the 55th minute, heading a cross from Leyva into the net. Following a wholesale lineup change at 60 minutes, Sounders FC created a couple of close chances, including a goal disallowed due to an offside call in the 88th minute, but the score remained 2-2.

In the 98th minute, Josh Atencio split multiple defenders with a through-ball for Handwalla Bwana, who was able to capitalize and score for the 3-2 lead and game winner.

Seattle now returns home from Southern California before heading out for its second stint of away camp in early February in Mexico City. The club then proceeds to Honduras for Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League play against Olimpia on February 20.

The current roster of 21 contracted players on the First Team is comprised of three goalkeepers, five defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards. In addition to those currently signed to First Team contracts, Brian Schmetzer's preseason roster includes players currently signed to Tacoma Defiance, unsigned SuperDraft picks, Sounders FC Academy players and trialists. Please note that not all players listed on the full preseason roster are present with the club in Southern California at all times due to scheduling matters, injuries or other unspecified reasons.
