RECAP: Sounders jump ahead early, settle for draw against Colorado Rapids

20240316-MAF02149

The Seattle Sounders drew the Colorado Rapids 1-1 on Saturday at Lumen Field behind an 11th-minute goal from RaĆŗl RuidĆaz and a late equalizer from Kevin Cabral.

Ruidiazā€™s cross deflected off the hand of defender Keegan Rosenberry, and RuidĆaz stepped up to take the ensuing penalty. He cheekily sent a Panenka that beat goalkeeper Zack Steffen for the early lead.

The Rapids had a chance to equalize in the 31st minute when Rafael Navarro tried to capitalize on a turnover on the Soundersā€™ back line, but his shot was saved by Andrew Thomas.

Colorado had another great opportunity three minutes later on a counterattack after Darren Yapiā€™s attempted cross was cut out by Jackson Ragen. Omir Fernandezā€™s one-timed effort off the deflection went just wide of Thomasā€™ net.

The best chance of the half for the Rapids came one minute into stoppage time when Yapi had an open goal at the far post, but Nouhou slid in to parry the shot away.

The match took a turn in the 57th minute when Josh Atencio was sent off for a second yellow card and Seattle was reduced to 10 men.

The Rapids earned a penalty attempt themselves in the 67th minute when Ragen fouled Navarro just inside the box. Thomas kept Colorado off the board when he dove to his right to deny Djordje Mihailovic.

Colorado found the leveler in the 88th minute when Cabral tapped in a rebound off a free kick that rattled off the post.
