Seattle Sounders are 29th-most attended club in world

CenturyLink Field vs. Cincinnati 2019-04-16

The Seattle Sounders are the 29th-most attended club in world football, according to a report from the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), an independent study center located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

From 2013-18, the Sounders averaged 42,797 fans per match, more than international giants Club América, AC Milan, Chelsea, Tottenham and Juventus.

The CIES Football Observatory specializes in the statistical analysis of football. It was created in 2005 by Dr. Raffaele Poli and Dr. Loïc Ravenel. CIES’ mission is to “advance the frontiers of knowledge for the sustainable development of football worldwide.”

Seattle is second in MLS, behind only Atlanta United (10th). German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund tops the list with over 80,000 fans per match.

MLS is the eighth-most attended league in the world in the last five years, with an average attendance of 21,358. Since 2003, only the Polish first division has seen larger attendance growth than MLS.

The Sounders are back in action on Saturday for a marquee matchup at LAFC (4 p.m. PT; FS1, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
