Seattle Sounders midfielder Aaron Kovar suffered an apparent fractured clavicle during the team's U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match against the LA Galaxy on Wednesday night, potentially putting the Homegrown youngster on the shelf for the near future as he recovers from the injury.
Kovar collided with Sounders defender Oniel Fisher in the 63rd minute of the match in Carson, Calif., and was attended to by medical staff before he walked off the field in visible pain. Head coach Sigi Schmid speculated following the match that Kovar had broken his collarbone, and Kovar confirmed that diagnosis via his personal Twitter feed on Thursday morning.
A broken clavicle typically require between 6-8 weeks to heal, but there's been no confirmation from the Sounders about the severity of the injury or a potential timeline for Kovar's return. He'll certainly miss the team's upcoming match at Sporting Kansas City on Sunday (12 p.m. PT; ESPN; KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360AM), as well as next week's Chipotle Homegrown Game, the annual summer showcase of rising MLS stars for which he was selected earlier this month.
Kovar has put together a career year in his third season with the Sounders, posting highs in appearances (15), starts (10) and minutes played (795). He also scored his first MLS goal with the club on May 28.
