The Seattle Sounders onTuesday signed Indiana University sophomore goalkeeper Trey Muse to a Homegrown contract. He becomes the Sounders’ 11th Homegrown Player, joining DeAndre Yedlin, Sean Okoli, Aaron Kovar, Victor Mansaray, Darwin Jones, Jordan Schweitzer, Seyi Adekoya and current teammates Jordan Morris, Henry Wingo and Handwalla Bwana.
Muse joins Stefan Frei and Bryan Meredith as goalkeepers on the Sounders’ 2019 roster.
“It’s always exciting to add an academy product and we’re pleased to sign Trey to the First Team roster,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “We’ve had success at goalkeeper over the years, so we’re looking forward to getting him to work with [Club Director of Goalkeeping] Tom Dutra once preseason gets started.”
Muse, 19, made 32 starts for the Sounders’ Academy over two seasons after relocating to Seattle from Louisville, Ky. He has great size at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, and was the most dominant goalkeeper in college soccer over the past two years. This past season, he was named a First Team All-American, Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which honors the best player in the country.
Muse led IU to the College Cup semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Maryland. He posted 12 solo shutouts and his 0.541 Goals Against Average led the Big Ten and was sixth in the country.
“I couldn’t be more excited to for the opportunity and to begin my professional career with the Sounders after two terrific seasons at Indiana University,” said Muse. “My two years in Bloomington under Head Coach Todd Yeagley and the rest of the IU staff have helped me tremendously for the next step in my journey. I can’t wait to get to Seattle to join the team and get to work for [Head] Coach [Brian] Schmetzer, Coach Dutra and learn from a couple of great veterans in Stefan Frei and Bryan Meredith.”
