TUCSON, ARIZ. – On its final day of a 10-day preseason camp in Tucson, Arizona, Sounders FC faced off against Western Conference rival Colorado Rapids on Tuesday at Kino Sports Complex. It was the second competitive match of the year for Seattle, after drawing 0-0 with Portland last Wednesday in its first tune-up match.

Tuesday’s preseason friendly featured a pair of 75-minute scrimmages, with Head Coach Brian Schmetzer deploying a separate lineup for each contest. Seattle’s XI for the opening match was comprised mostly of First Team players with some 2021 Tacoma Defiance players, while the lineup for the second 75 minutes featured a few Sounders FC Academy players and unsigned SuperDraft selections.

The first 75-minute scrimmage ended 1-1, with Raúl Ruidíaz scoring the lone goal for Seattle. After Lucas Esteves opened the scoring in the 40th minute, Ruidíaz equalized five minutes before the final whistle, collecting a deflected shot and chipping a ball into the far side of the net. The Rapids won the second match 2-0 thanks to a brace from Darren Yapi.

Brian Schmetzer’s side now heads home to Seattle before departing for its second preseason trip to Palm Springs on February 8. The 2022 campaign starts with a home-and-away series against F.C. Motagua in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League. Seattle plays in Honduras on February 17 before hosting Motagua on February 24 at Lumen Field. The Rave Green’s 2022 MLS regular-season slate begins at home on February 27 vs. Nashville SC.
