Lamar Neagle

Sounders FC earns 3-1 road win over Colorado Rapids

Oba Celebration vs COL 150418

COMMERCE CITY, COLO. – Lamar Neagle scored a first-half brace as Sounders FC (3-2-1, 10 points) defeated the Colorado Rapids (1-3-2, 5 points) 3-1 Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Obafemi Martins added his fourth goal of the season as Seattle earned three points on the road for the first time this season.

Neagle put Seattle on the board in the fifth minute when he curled a shot from the edge of the 18-yard-box inside the far post for his first goal of the season. Three minutes after the Rapids equalized, he completed the brace, getting behind the Rapids defense courtesy of a lofted through ball from Marco Pappa. The Federal Way-native struck a first-time shot that was saved by Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin, but Neagle knocked in the rebound for his third career multi-goal game.

Martins added a late tally in the 73rd minute when he collected a long pass from Andy Rose with a deft first touch before spinning away from the defense for a one-on-one with Irwin. The 2014 Volkswagen MLS MVP runner-up calmly slotted a shot past the Colorado netminder for his team-high fourth goal of the season.

Colorado scored its lone goal in the 22nd minute when Dillon Powers played Gabriel Torres behind the defense for a calm finish inside the area.

Stefan Frei tied a career-high with nine saves to earn his third win of the season in his 40th career start as a member of Sounders FC.

The Rave Green return to action next week with a home fixture against the Portland Timbers in the first Cascadia Cup match of the season. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field, with the match being broadcast nationally on FOX Sports 1.
