Sounders FC runs away with 5-0 victory over league-leading FC Dallas

Dempsey Morris

SEATTLE, WASH.
 - Five goals from five different players propelled Seattle Sounders FC (6-10-2, 20 points) to a 5-0 home win over first-place FC Dallas (11-6-4, 37 points) Wednesday evening on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. Clint Dempsey started the scoring with a sixth-minute penalty kick before Andreas Ivanschitz and Jordan Morris made it 3-0 at halftime of the mid-week clash. Joevin Jones and Cristian Roldan added second-half tallies as the Rave Green set a new club record for margin of victory in MLS play. Sigi Schmid's side returns to action on Sunday with a nationally-televised Cascadia road clash against the Portland Timbers on free-to-air FOX Broadcasting Network.
Seattle wasted little time getting its largest offensive outburst of the season going on Wednesday night, with Clint Dempsey converting a sixth-minute penalty-kick after Maynor Figueroa was sent off for a hand-ball inside his own six-yard-box. Austrian midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz placed the original shot on on-frame, before referee Ricardo Salazar ruled that Figueroa had blocked the attempt with his right hand. Dempsey slotted his attempt past Dallas netminder Chris Seitz to record his third MLS goal of 2016.
Ivanschitz doubled the home side's lead in the 18
th
minute of play with a deft chip shot over an onrushing Seitz, with Ozzie Alonso slotting the playmaker through on goal from midfield. A single touch of Ivanschitz's seasoned left foot was all Seattle needed to jump out to an early 2-0 lead with the man-advantage.
Morris got in on the action just four minutes after Ivanschitz's goal, with the rookie forward from Mercer Island recording his seventh strike of 2016, as he continues to cement his single-season club scoring record for a first-year player. Alonso once again unlocked the opposing defense, playing the ball to Dempsey at the edge of the Dallas 18-yard-box. The Texan laid the ball off to Morris on the right side of the area, allowing the rookie to finish at Seitz's far post. For Alonso, the assist was his fourth of 2016, a single-season high for the Cuban in eight MLS seasons with Sounders FC.
The last major event of first-half play occurred in the 33
rd
minute, when Dempsey was whistled for a foul on Juan Esteban Ortiz, resulting in a straight red card. The forward's departure leveled the match at 10 players apiece for the two sides for the remainder of the contest.
Seattle continued to pile on the pressure throughout the second half, with fullback Jones recording a goal from the edge of the area. Fellow fullback Oniel Fisher provided the assist at the end of a probing run from the right flank.
Ivanschitz provided the assist off of a free-kick from the left flank in the 73
rd
minute, with Roldan recording his first MLS goal to add the exclamation mark for the evening.
Sounders FC hits the road for the first matchup of the season against the Portland Timbers on Sunday, July 17. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. PT at Providence Park in the lone match of the season to air nationally on free-to-air FOX Broadcast Network. Regional radio coverage in Western Washington is being provided via KIRO Radio and El Rey 1360 AM.
