Sounders FC Set For Nov. 26 Expansion Draft

Seattle Sounders FC officials have begun the final phase of their selection process for the 2008 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft.
RENTON, WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC officials have begun the final phase of their selection process for the 2008 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft. General manager Adrian Hanauer and technical director Chris Henderson will take 10 players in the draft this Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. ET.

Seattle, set to become the 15th MLS team in the 2009 season, will claim one player from 10 existing teams; four teams will not lose any player. The league has distributed the list of available players.

Sounders FC has already signed four players for its inaugural season: Kasey Keller, goalkeeper; Sebastien Le Toux, forward; Freddie Ljungberg, midfielder; and Sanna Nyassi, midfielder.

Hanauer and Henderson will make their final determinations from the Emeryville, Ca., offices of Match Analysis, a provider of video and statistical analysis tools, archiving services, and value-added content for professional soccer. Match Analysis records and verifies over 2400 distinct events per match. Using proprietary technology, every touch by every player is catalogued precisely, synchronized against video feeds, and stored in an expansive video database of international football.

Existing teams were allowed to protect 11 players between their Senior and Developmental rosters. Players whose contracts expire at the end of 2008 were still considered part of the team’s Senior Roster and among the 11 possible players to protect.

Any Generation adidas players who have not graduated at the end of the 2008 season were automatically protected by the teams and not available for the draft. If Seattle selects a Developmental player, he must be added to the Sounders FC Senior Roster as of the roster compliance date.

In addition, each team could not make more than one Senior International player available. For purposes of this expansion process, for U.S.-based teams, any non-domestic U.S. player counts as an International and for Toronto FC, any non-domestic U.S. player or non-domestic Canadian player counts as an International. Designated Players did not have to be protected unless the player had a no trade clause in which case he must be protected.

Seattle will have the right to renegotiate a drafted player's salary without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous team a right of first refusal.

On the first day of the Discovery/Allocation Period, Seattle will have priority over players who played professionally in the USL First or Second Division in 2008, subject to another MLS team's right of first refusal.

Beginning in 2009, MLS rules limit rosters to 24 players with each club permitted up to 20 Senior players. The balance is to be comprised of Developmental players.

Listed below are the unprotected players submitted to the league by the 14 MLS teams.
