Sounders FC trades midfielder Lamar Neagle to D.C. United for allocation money

Sounders FC made its first trade of the offseason on Monday, dealing midfielder and Washington native Lamar Neagle to D.C. United in exchange for general allocation money and targeted allocation money (TAM).

Per MLS and club policy, additional terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

Neagle, 28, appeared in 93 regular season games with the Sounders from 2013-15, his third stint with the club. He originally signed with the team in 2009 before he was eventually let go, and he signed again in 2011 before he was dealt to the Montreal Impact in 2012.

Neagle scored 21 goals and added 15 assists in MLS play over the past three seasons, and scored three goals in four Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League games in 2015, helping the Sounders advance past the group stage and into the quarterfinals in February. He is tied for third in franchise history with 26 goals in 116 regular-season appearances.

He enjoyed a career year with nine goals and nine assists during the Sounders’ run to the Supporters’ Shield in 2014, but his minutes trailed off during the second half of last season following the acquisition of Austrian international Andreas Ivanschitz. He did not appear in any of the team’s three postseason games.

“Lamar has been a player who I think has been really important to who we are as the Sounders,” Sounders GM and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey told media last week. “He’s a local kid who’s done well and worked really hard under some fairly adverse circumstances during the season this year. We are really appreciative of what Lamar’s given to the organization.”

Originally from Federal Way, Wash., Neagle was a prep standout at Thomas Jefferson High School in Auburn before attending UNLV. He was named the Sounders’ Humanitarian of the Year in 2013 and was a finalist again for the award last season for his work with his organization, The Neagle Foundation, as well as other charities.
