SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that it has waived midfielder Zach Mathers. The club’s roster now currently sits at 27 players ahead of Seattle’s MLS opener this Sunday, March 4 against expansion side Los Angeles FC on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field (2:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
Mathers, 23, was the club’s Second Round selection (35th overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. The Duke product played one season for Sounders FC 2 before signing with the first team prior to last season. Despite not making an MLS appearance, Mathers has 14 goals and eight assists in 24 appearances for S2 across two seasons.
Sounders FC opens MLS play at home this Sunday, March 4 (2:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, ESPN Deportes, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). Following Thursday’s win over Santa Tecla FC in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, the Rave Green face Mexican giant Chivas Guadalajara in the tournament’s Quarterfinal Round, with the first leg set for Wednesday, March 7 at CenturyLink Field.
