Sounders trade defender Oniel Fisher for $50,000 in General Allocation Money

On Wednesday morning, the Sounders announced they have acquired $50,000 in General Allocation Money from D.C. United in exchange for defender Oniel Fisher. Fisher, 26, was selected by the Rave Green in the Second Round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. He has 32 MLS appearances in the regular season and postseason, making 20 starts.

A Portmore, Jamaica, native, Fisher was selected by Seattle after a stellar collegiate career with the University of New Mexico Lobos. He made a career-high 12 appearances, including nine starts, as a rookie in 2015. The speedy fullback was part of the MLS Cup-winning squad in 2016, in which he appeared in six league contests. Last season, Fisher was the primary starter at right back, making nine appearances, before the signing of Kelvin Leerdam.

With Fisher’s departure, the Sounders don’t have a clear backup to Leerdam. Gustav Svensson, Cristian Roldan and Jordy Delem have all recorded MLS minutes at fullback, but their primary positions are in the midfield. Fisher, who has experience with Jamaica’s national team, received his U.S. green card in January 2017 and didn’t occupy an international slot.
