Stefan Frei remembers the first time he strolled into CenturyLink Field nearly seven years ago, when he was a 23-year-old rookie with Toronto FC, bewildered by what soccer in Seattle really looked like.
And he remembers perhaps his finest moment as a Sounders player here in 2014, when a penalty kick save created utter pandemonium and, as Frei puts it, “the sound of the Emerald City Supporters made me black out.”
He’s well aware there are more memories to come, and in a candid letter published Tuesday on the Players’ Tribune, he thanked the fans for their support and promised bigger and better things from the club.
“Without the fans, we wouldn’t be a special team,” Frei wrote. “We’d just be average — and Seattle, we are anything but average. Here’s to you. Thank you for your passion. I promise you that we’ll always work hard to make you proud. We know that you already do the same for us.”
