Ten Sounders FC Players Called into International Duty

Int'l Callups 6/3/19

SEATTLE, WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC is set to have 10 players called into international duty: Nicolás Lodeiro (Uruguay), Raúl Ruidíaz (Peru), Xavier Arreaga (Ecuador), Jordan Morris (United States), Cristian Roldan (United States), Román Torres (Panama), Joevin Jones (Trinidad & Tobago), Jordy Delem (Martinique), Gustav Svensson (Sweden) and Brad Smith (Australia) will all join their respective national teams this month. With the club having over three weeks off from MLS regular-season play following Wednesday’s match at Montreal (4:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM), Seattle players will be in action all over the globe, including at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Copa América and European Championship Qualifiers.

Lodeiro has been named to Uruguay’s final 23-man roster for this summer’s Copa América in Brazil, with La Celeste playing in Group C with Ecuador, Chile and guests Japan. In his first match of the tournament, Lodeiro is set to face Arreaga and Ecuador on Sunday, June 16 in Belo Horizonte. Prior to that, Uruguay will host Torres and Panama in a tune-up match on Friday, June 7 in Montevideo.

Ruidíaz is also set to participate in the upcoming Copa América tournament after being named to the 23-man roster for Peru, who is in Group A with Venezuela, Boliva and hosts Brazil. La Blanquirroja open the Group Stage against Venezuela on Saturday, June 15, in Porto Alegre, following tune-up friendlies vs. Costa Rica on June 5 and Colombia on June 9.

Arreaga has been named to Ecuador’s final 23-man roster, totaling three Sounders FC players participating in the prestigious Copa América this summer. The defender made his international debut for La Tricolor in a friendly against Panama on November 20, 2018, his only cap thus far. Ecuador plays in the aforementioned Group C and kicks off tournament action vs. Uruguay on June 16 following a friendly vs. Mexico on June 9.

Morris and Roldan have each been summoned to the U.S. Men’s National Team training camp in Annapolis, Maryland this week ahead of a June 5 friendly in Washington, D.C. vs. Jamaica (4:00 p.m. PT / FS1, UníMas, UDN). The USMNT’s final 23-man roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup is due by midnight following the June 5 friendly, with the official announcement taking place the next day. In its final tune-up before the Gold Cup, the U.S. faces Venezuela in Cincinnati on Sunday, June 9 (11:00 a.m. PT / FOX, UníMas). Once the Gold Cup begins, the Stars & Stripes are set to play in Group D alongside Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana, meaning Morris and Roldan could face teammates Torres and Jones in the Group Stage. Head Coach Gregg Berhalter’s squad kicks off Gold Cup action on June 18 vs. Guyana at Allianz Field in Minnesota.

Torres has been named to Panama’s preliminary Gold Cup roster, with Los Canaleros set to play a final tune-up friendly at Uruguay on June 7. Panama begins Group D action on June 18 vs. Jones and Trinidad & Tobago.

Jones has been included on the preliminary Gold Cup roster for Trinidad & Tobago. The Soca Warriors face Japan in a friendly on June 5 before the Gold Cup Group Stage opener against Panama.

Delem has been named to Martinique’s preliminary roster Gold Cup, with Les Matinino is set to play in Group A alongside Mexico, Canada and Cuba. Martinique opens Group Stage play on June 15 vs. Canada at the Rose Bowl.

Moving across the pond, Svensson has been named to Sweden’s roster for a pair of upcoming UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifying matches. The Blågult host Malta at Friends Arena in Solna, Sweden, on Friday, June 7 before visiting three-time Euro winner Spain at Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid on Monday, June 10. Sweden is currently second with four points (1-1-0) in Group F, alongside Romania, Norway and the Faroe Islands, in addition to Malta and first-place Spain.

Lastly, Smith has been called in for Australia’s friendly against South Korea on June 7 in Busan. Should Smith appear, it would mark the fullback’s first international appearance since October of 2017.

Following a 2-1 loss on Saturday at FC Dallas, Sounders FC concludes its four-match road swing on Wednesday, June 5 against the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo (4:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). Wednesday’s match is the last regular-season contest for over three weeks, with Seattle next hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, June 29 (7:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). Prior to that, Seattle has a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fixture against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, June 12 at Cheney Stadium.
