Sounders FC defender Tyrone Mears is having a fantastic first season in the Emerald City. He’s been fitting right in with an already-solid back line and has been finding space to get forward and create chances.
On Friday night, he took that to the next level.
As the clock crept closer to full time at CenturyLink Field, Mears took matters into his own hands. Pouncing on a rebound just inside the corner of the area, Mears fired a rocket into the far side of the goal, putting the Sounders on top for a 1-0 win over Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United. The victory snapped the Sounders’ three-match losing streak and put the team in a dead lock with Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the lead in the Western Conference.
The good news just kept coming for No. 4 on Monday, as Mears was named to the MLS Team of the Week for his heroic efforts over the Black-and-Red. Mears’ first MLS goal was also rewarded with a nod for AT&T Goal of the Week. You can rewatch his beautiful strike here:
