Seattle Sounders defender Xavier Arreaga and Ecuador lost their second straight match at the 2019 Copa América, dropping a 2-1 result against Chile at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil.
Chile took the lead in the 8th minute when José Fuenzalida pounced on a poor clearance from a corner kick, smashing a volley through traffic and into the bottom corner. Ecuador equalized from the penalty spot 16 minutes later, as Enner Valencia confidently blasted his PK past the Chilean goalkeeper.
Manchester United winger Alexis Sánchez sealed the three points in the 51st minute with a composed finish from inside the box.
For the second straight match, Arreaga made the matchday roster, but did not feature.
However, one of Ecuador’s center backs, Gabriel Achilier, received a red card in the 89th minute of the loss to Chile, opening the door for Arreaga in his country’s final group stage match against Japan on June 24 (4 p.m. PT; ESPN+)
