2017 (Seattle): After impressing in his first season as a professional with Sounders FC 2, Mathers signed a First Team contract ahead of the 2017 MLS campaign. In 24 USL appearances with S2 in 2017, the attacking midfielder contributed 11 goals and 4 assists. The fulcrum of the team’s attack, Mathers finished the campaign as the league’s 10th-highest chance creator with 64 key passes. The Duke product did not appear in MLS action for Seattle, but started and scored a penalty kick in Sounders FC’s 2-1 win over Portland in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (June 13), and logged 45 minutes in a friendly vs. Eintracht Frankfurt (July 8).
2016 (Sounders FC 2): In his first professional season, Mathers recorded three goals and four assists in 19 appearances for S2. A constant menace for opposing defenses as an attacking midfielder, Mathers earned short-term agreements with the First Team and made three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearances.
2015: In his senior season at Duke, Mathers appeared in 19 matches on 17 starts. Mathers led the Blue Devils with eight goals and eight assists, in addition to pacing the team with 64 shot attempts. The midfielder was named to the All-ACC First Team in his lone year in an attacking role for the squad.
2014: The team captain earned All-ACC Third Team honors as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. Mathers started in each of his 16 appearances, scoring two goals and adding one assist. His goals came in a brace against Appalachian State. He was named to the John Rennie Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the Blue Devils to the title.
2013: In his sophomore campaign, Mathers made 18 appearances on 18 starts, earning an All-ACC Third Team selection. He led the squad with five assists and added two goals. Mathers registered goals in the first two games of the season en route to earning the MVP award from the John Rennie Nike Classic. He provided the assist to the goal in a 1-0 win against Clemson to secure qualification in the ACC Tournament.
2012: As a freshman, Mathers made 18 starts for Duke, earning a selection to the All-ACC Freshman Team. The squad’s Rookie of the Year tied for the team-lead with four assists. He recorded his first collegiate points with two assists against Georgia State and scored his first goal against Virginia Tech.
A Solar Chelsea Academy product, Mathers helped lead Keller High School to the 2009 5-5A District Title. In 2009, he was part of the Solar squad that won the 2009 North Texas state title and USYSA Region III title.
Mathers was selected with the 15th pick of the Second Round (35th overall) in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.
