Sounders FC 2 earns road draw against Switchbacks FC

0718 S2 Recap

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 (10-6-3, 33 points) earned a point on the road Saturday after a 1-1 draw with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (10-6-2, 32 points). Switchbacks FC opened the scoring in the first half with a goal from Aaron King, but S2 equalized with Sérgio Mota’s second goal of the season, assisted by Aaron Kovar. The point moves S2 into a first-place tie with LA Galaxy II for the top of the USL Western Conference.

Colorado Springs found the net first early in the match with a ninth-minute goal from King. After a corner kick was cleared out by the S2 defense, Colorado’s Jordan Burt sent a cross into the box that found an unmarked King whose header gave the home side a 1-0 lead.

A minute after entering the game at the hour mark, S2 forward Oalex Anderson carried the ball up to the edge of the Switchbacks FC penalty area and cut his pass back to the top of the box to find Kovar. Kovar slid a through ball to find Sérgio, who put a shot past goalkeeper Samir Badr at the near post for the equalizing goal.

Sérgio was issued a straight red card in the 88th minute, forcing the Brazilian to miss S2’s series finale on July 24 against Portland Timbers 2 at Starfire Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / SoundersFC.com).
