Jordan Morris will compete for an NCAA national title this weekend while Sounders FC fans await word on if he’s decided on whether or not to pursue his professional career in Seattle.
Morris, the 21 year-old Seattle native and prized Sounders FC Academy product who has the Cardinal in the College Cup for the first time since 2002, is still very the much the topic of offseason conversation for the Sounders’ front office and the club’s fans. The club extended Morris the most lucrative contract for a Homegrown Player in MLS history earlier this year, but it’s unclear if Morris will accept the offer and forego his senior year at Stanford.
Sounders GM and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey has repeatedly said he has not communicated with Morris because of NCAA regulations, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be watching closely when Stanford takes on Clemson in the NCAA championship game on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT.
“Quite understandably, he’s said, ‘Hey, I’d rather talk about this when I’m done,’” Lagerwey told SoundersFC.com this week. “I’ll be watching with bated breath - I think he’ll play great and his team will play great - and hopefully after they win the title someone’s going to stick a microphone in his face and he’s gonna tell us all what he’s gonna do. I’m waiting just as anxiously as every fan out there and I have no idea.”
“I think Jordan’s gonna make his own decision, and whatever he decides, we’ll be hopeful that he chooses the Sounders.”
SoundersFC.com will release the entire wide-ranging interview with Lagerwey on Monday, Dec. 14, covering topics including the team’s salary cap concerns, the fate of Osvaldo Alonso, the health of Clint Dempsey and more.
