Seattle Sounders top Colorado Rapids, advance to first-ever MLS Cup Final

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Seattle Sounders will play in the MLS Cup Final for the first time in franchise history next month, and they’ll find out later this week if they will host the historic match on home turf.

The Sounders won the Western Conference Championship with a 3-1 aggregate-goal series win over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, clinching their first-ever berth in the MLS title game. The Sounders won the first leg of the series 2-1 at home on Nov. 22 before Jordan Morris scored the only goal of a 1-0 win for the Sounders in the second leg on a crisp, cold day in Colorado on Sunday.

Now the Sounders will await the winner of the Eastern Conference Championship to learn their foe in the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 10. Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact will play the second leg of their series on Wednesday at BMO Field in Toronto, with the Impact carrying a 3-2 lead into the series finale after a wild first leg on Nov. 22 in Montreal.

If the Impact win the Eastern Conference Championship the Sounders will host the MLS Cup Final at CenturyLink Field after posting a better record during the regular season than Montreal. But if Toronto FC win the conference championship, the Sounders will play for their first league title at BMO Field in Toronto.

The Sounders beat Montreal 1-0 at CenturyLink Field in the teams’ only meeting of the regular season in April and played to a 1-1 draw at Toronto in July.

Sunday marked the first time in three attempts that the Sounders captured the Western Conference crown. They previously lost in the Western Conference Championship in 2012 and 2014.
