SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that is has traded the rights to defender Tyrone Mears to Atlanta United FC in exchange for $50,000 in General Allocation Money. Mears appeared in 65 MLS regular-season appearances over the past two seasons – all starts – including 32 games played in Seattle’s 2016 MLS Cup title run.
“I’d like to thank Tyrone for his contributions to the club over the past two seasons,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “These decisions are never easy, but we’ll always remember and appreciate Tyrone for being an integral part of our first MLS Cup title-winning squad. We wish him the best of luck going forward.”
Mears signed with Sounders FC on December 29, 2014 following a 14-year career in England and France. In his first season in MLS, he led Seattle with 33 starts and 2,960 minutes at right back, recording one goal and three assists. The Manchester native returned in 2016 by starting all 32 of his appearances and recording two assists as Sounders FC went on to win its first MLS Cup title.
