The Seattle Sounders won Sports Story of the Year at the 82nd annual MTRWestern Sports Star of the Year ceremony on Wednesday at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle.
The Sounders won their first MLS Cup in December in the most impressive fashion, going from ninth place in the Western Conference as late as September en route to a playoff berth on Decision Day before ultimately defeating Toronto FC in penalty kicks in the final.
"It is an incredible honor to be selected as Sports Story of the Year, especially given the accomplishments of our fellow Seattle sports teams over the past season,” said Sounders owner Adrian Hanauer. “Our club is humbled to have added to Seattle’s illustrious sports history by bringing home our first MLS Cup. This award, like the Cup itself, belongs not only to our club’s talented players, coaches and staff, but also to this city, region and all of our incredible fans.”
The Sounders beat out the University of Washington’s women’s basketball team making the Final Four, the University of Washington’s women’s golf team winning the national title, the University of Washington’s football team making the College Football Playoff, former Mariner Ken Griffey Jr. entering the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Seahawks winning the NFC West for the third time in four years.
The Sports Star Committee includes local sports historians, members of the media and other members of the sports industry.
Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris was also nominated for Male Athlete of the Year, which was won by Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner.
