Sounders FC 2 comes up short in 1-0 loss to Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Starfire Stadium

Steve Whyte 8.30

TUKWILA, WASH. - Sounders FC 2 (9-14-2, 29 points) fell in a 1-0 defeat to Tulsa Roughnecks FC (11-10-3, 36 points) at Starfire Stadium on Wednesday evening. Despite 21 shots, S2 was unable to convert a chance and snapped its two-match winning streak. Still 10th in the Western Conference, S2 visits Phoenix Rising on Saturday evening (7:30 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).

S2 had its fair share of opportunities in the first half, garnering four shots on target. Forward Felix Chenkam nearly recorded a goal in the 22nd minute, but his well-struck shot just missed the top right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, another one of his attempts struck the woodwork.

Tulsa broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 72nd minute off a corner kick. A minute after S2 midfielder Zach Mathers' free-kick shot was denied by a full-extension save, Tulsa's Francisco Ugarte found the ball after a scrum in the area and poked his shot past S2 goalkeeper Bryan Meredith.

Despite recording 21 shots, including six on target, S2 was unable find the back of the net. Of note, defender Steve Whyte, a 21-year-old Australian, made his USL debut and played 90 minutes.

Four points below the postseason cutoff line, Ezra Hendrickson's side returns to action on the road against Phoenix Rising on Saturday evening. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
