D.C. United 0, Seattle Sounders 2 - Jordan Morris and Joevin Jones lead the way to a Sounders win

Jordan Morris and Joevin Jones at DC 160601

Jordan Morris and Joevin Jones scored second-half goals within four minutes of each other, pacing the Seattle Sounders to a 2-0 victory over DC United at RFK Stadium on Wednesday night.

Morris netted for Seattle in the 79th minute, with Jones adding the insurance goal in the 83rd to give the Sounders the decisive 2-0 advantage. It was the first goal in a Sounders uniform for Jones in his first season with Seattle after arriving in an offseason trade with the Chicago Fire.

Neither side managed to crack the scoresheet in the first half, although both had their chances.

Former Sounder Lamar Neagle – making his first appearance of the season for DC against his former club – very nearly opened the scoring in just the fourth minute when he managed to get his head to a cross from Fabian Espindola. But the Federal Way native put his attempt wide of Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei, just missing the early tally.

DCU had another good look at an opening goal just minutes later after Espindola found himself in space off a feed from Luciano Acosta. But Epsindola’s shot went wide of Frei.

Seattle midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz narrowly missed a highlight reel tally in the 38th minute, launching a rocket attempt from well outside the DC penalty box after Morris had a shot cleared off the line. The Austrian’s attempt deflected off the crossbar, keeping the match scoreless.

Morris finally broke through in the 79th minute, cashing home a rebound of an initial shot on goal from Jones that Hamid saved, the fifth goal of the season for the 21-year-old rookie forward. Morris now holds the Sounders rookie scoring record, passing Steve Zakuani. Jones followed up with the dagger shortly after, poking home a feed from midfielder Ozzie Alonso to effectively seal the road victory.

With the win, Seattle moved to 5-7-1 ahead of their upcoming two-week break for this month’s Copa America Centenario tournament. The Sounders return to action after the break, staying on the East Coast to take on the New York Red Bulls on June 19.
