TUKWILA, Wash. – The Seattle Sounders could have a trio of injured starters back on the field as soon as Wednesday as they prepare for a tough road match this weekend at Real Salt Lake.
Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said Monday that Brad Evans was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his left shoulder later in the day to see the extent of any possible damage after the captain and starting center back went down late in the team’s 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night.
Evans was upended by SKC forward Dom Dwyer as he challenged for a header near midfield, and was forced to come out of the game in the 90th minute. Schmid said Sunday night Evans could be available later this week depending on the results of the MRI and his pain threshold.
Midfielder Erik Friberg, meanwhile, is still progressing on the league’s concussion protocol after colliding with defender Chad Marshall against Club America last week. Friberg is expected to resume training on either Wednesday or Thursday, barring any setbacks in his recovery.
Defender Tyrone Mears was held out of Sunday’s game with a quad strain and could be back on the field midweek.
The Sounders will play their first road game of the year against RSL on Saturday (1 p.m. PT; JOEtv/KIRO 97.3 FM/El Rey 1360 AM).
