Match Recap: Sounders FC opens preseason play against Uruguayan side Peñarol

Sounders FC kicked off its 2020 preseason play in California with a closed-door scrimmage against Uruguayan Primera Division club PeƱarol, falling 1-0 in a match that featured three nearly wholesale lineup changes and heavy playing time by young players from Tacoma Defiance and Sounders FC Academy.

Available starters began the match before a first lineup change at the 30-minute mark, giving the first group of younger players time on the field. At 60 minutes, another break was called for a third lineup change for additional Tacoma Defiance, Sounders Academy and camp trialists.

The play was spirited and, overall, the Rave Green's young up-and-comers had a strong showing after only just over a week of training after preseason began on January 14. PeƱarol's lone goal came in the 37th minute, as a free kick from Jonathan Urretaviscaya flew into the top corner, just past goalkeeper Trey Muse's outstretched arms.

Following the morning's match, Sounders FC continues training in Southern California with a second closed-door scrimmage against Loyala Marymount University on January 29 prior to returning to Seattle. The club then has a second camp scheduled in Mexico City in February prior to beginning Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League play against Olimpia in Honduras on February 21.

Sounders FC's current preseason roster can be found via the following link: https://sndrs.com/9h5xd.

The current roster of 21 contracted players on the First Team is comprised of three goalkeepers, five defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards. In addition to those currently signed to First Team contracts, Brian Schmetzer's preseason roster includes players currently signed to Tacoma Defiance, unsigned SuperDraft picks, Sounders FC Academy players and trialists. Please note that not all players listed on the full preseason roster are present with the club in Southern California at all times due to scheduling matters, injuries or other unspecified reasons.
